YOU TO ME

These shadows that make your eyes shine,
Brightly lit with darkness;
Shimmering in their eerie glee,
Strangeness to some but beauty to me.

This black abyss that pleasures you,
In these shadows I can live too.
In the backdrop of the sky, maybe;
Clouds to some but stars to me.

These stars that you gaze at fondly,
Are the ones from our fantasies;
Yet, through the vastness of these skies-
How my eyes still find your eyes.

Fires that burn the streets of your mind,
Filling your walls with dancing shadows,
I wonder if we could dance so too,
Look upon those lanes anew.

In a world with shattered hearts of dust,
A soul so pure with kindness;
Oh, how your light shines, see?
Blinding to some but heaven to me.

And let me shout these words that end,
Declare upon these crumbling sheets;
What with his ink he writes above,
These things I feel for you, my love.

THE HUMAN MIND

The many intricacies of a human mind.

The neurons and mechanisms that go into making it a ball of thoughts and results, say.
I pretend not to know the mechanisms but, might I admit, the intricacies I may?
For no, I have no great understanding of the world in all its glory;
Nor do I posses the wisdom sages do - May I say sorry?
What I do have is this ball of thoughts and reasons that I call just mine.
While some may not find it worth words, to a humble heart it feels divine.
It roars not like a mighty beast, nor a hero, nor a dashing villain;
But oh, it hums as it absorbs and reflects this shiny world we live in.
Wings take flight in the ball of light and love, as high as imagination may take;
And what else does a fragment need, for it's fragments that a universe make.
No great theories take birth here, nor do lengthy equations arise;
What does bloom, though, are a million words as I take in a mother's eyes.
For that is the beauty and the strength this ball of wonder offers me;
And I bask, yes bask, as I drown willingly into this well - infinitely free.

LOVE

I want a love that burns.
Love that makes blood sing in my veins;
And every inch of my skin tingle,
From my toes to the tips of my fingers
and all the way up to the roots of my hair.
I want a love that makes me sigh;
My toes to curl and my fists to clench,
And my heart to beat in rhythms it's never felt before.
I want a love that melts in my mouth,
Like a fluff of cotton candy;
And bursts across my taste buds with flavors,
Leaving my tongue colored and sweet-scented.
I want a love that makes me think.
Of far away places and different perspectives
And makes me see stars and galaxies
every time I close my eyes.
I want a love that rips into my mind and heart;
Scattering them across the floor of my life
Like beads from a broken necklace.
I want to feel love in every cell of my body,
Screaming I love, love, LOVE you;
Feel it unfurl in all of my atoms,
Till nothing is left of me and I am left nothing but love.

THE CRIME : RAPE OR BEING A WOMAN?

India. A land of beauty. A land of variety. A land of diversity. A land of culture.
These are the descriptive tags associated with our country when we read about it in school books and essays as children. It's only when we open the newspapers that the uncensored truth comes before us.
Ours is the only country in which both the phrases "Beti ghar ki laxmi hoti hai" and "Beti baap ka bojh hoti hai" can go hand in hand and still be legitimate.
Let me just say that my intent is not to defame or generalize India in any way whatsoever. India is a developing country, and has it's share of negative and positive qualities. Yes, the government is invested in the development of women rights and the reform of our country.
However, in the light of certain events such as the ban of the BBC documentary India's Daughter, it's been made clear that some things need to be discussed and to be changed.

Novelist Margret Atwood once asked some males why men feel threatened by women and they replied, "They are afraid women will laugh at them." When she asked a group of women why they feel threatened by men, they said, "We're afraid of being beaten, raped and killed."

I've always been a feminist. I was a feminist before I knew what feminism meant.
By definition, Feminism is the belief that men and women should have equal rights and opportunities.
It just seemed like such a no-brainer to me even as a child that I was shocked there was an actual, separate term for it.
I mean, Human Rights existed already, so why the need of special rights for equality among men and women? Doesn't the basic Human Rights apply to both automatically, in the same measure? Or does having different sets of chromosomes and reproductive organs somehow make women less 'human' as compared to men?
Often, feminist are considered to be 'man- bashers '. You might have read the last paragraph and thought to yourself, "What in the name of God does she have against men?"
The answer is- nothing. I don't hate men. I don't think all men are rapists.
I have nothing against men, nor do I consider the male race solely responsible for the inequality and prejudice that some women face. In fact, most of the men I have come across fortunately believe in the equality of all the genders as strongly as I do.
This equality issue goes both ways- just as women have the right to be strong and independent, men have the right to be vulnerable and sensitive. It is equally wrong to teach a boy-child not to cry or show his emotions since he's "not a girl" as it is to not send a girl-child to school since she is a girl.
Every person has the right to be as and what he/she chooses to be.
This is what feminism meant to me, and I assume to most people.

Maybe that is why it was such a slap to my face when I saw the documentary and witnessed the rapist of a young girl discuss how the rape was entirely the victim's fault for having struggled against her rapists, since 'taali ek hath se nahi bajti'.
I watched in disbelief as he looked right into the  camera and nonchalantly discussed in great detail the way they had inhumanly raped her; so brutally, in fact, that they could pull out her intestines.
How they dumped them and then went on to wipe the blood soaked floor and seats of the bus the next day.
All this, without blinking an eye. Without the faintest trace of guilt or remorse on his face. According to him, they gang raped a girl to the point that almost all her bodily functions stopped working in order to "Teach them a lesson."

This was a slap to my face alright, but then came Mr Manohar Lal Sharma, the defense lawyer of the 16th December gang rape case, who literally knocked me out. I seriously had to pause the video and concentrate on breathing for a moment there. Imagine my complete shock at hearing a presumably educated man (although I have my doubts there) spout such utter nonsense. Never have I been more disgusted, humiliated and scared as a women than when I heard that man, a lawyer, say "We have the best culture. In our culture, there’s no place for a woman. You are talking about man and woman as friends. Sorry, that doesn’t have any place in our society. A woman means I immediately put the sex in his eyes. "
Yes. In a land which is worshiped as 'Bharat Mata', apparently there are people who don't even consider women a part of our culture.

The harsh truth is, even as we read of the endless rape cases all over the country and even as we see the endless news about it, we subconsciously distance ourselves from such an incident. No one never considers in depth that we could be the next victim.
Even if we go no farther than the park at the front of our houses (or maybe even if we don't go out at all), even if we cover ourselves from head to toe, even if we are with someone, even if we are alone, irrespective of our age,  we could be the next victim.
We are NOT safe. We are all vulnerable.
Was it really so wrong to have gone out for a movie with a male friend? This incident happened around 8:30 pm. Is it really such an unconventionally late hour?
As I finished watching the documentary, I was devastated and disgusted to my very core. I felt powerless at watching the misery of Nirbhaya's parents, who took such pains to bring her up into a beautiful and talented young woman. And the thousand upon thousand women in our country, who have fathers, brothers and relatives like these defense lawyers, whose rape cases are not even reported. People who  would sooner set fire on a daughter who "got herself" raped than let her show her face in the society again.

Again, who is to blame here? And most importantly, what can be done to stop this hideous crime?
Yes, girls should learn self-defence techniques, and carry pepper sprays in their bags for protection, but aren't these solutions too short-term?
These prevention methods would not have to be taken if there was no such crime to prevent.
In a country that boasts of the grand title of "The Largest Democracy" in the world, shouldn't there be some solutions in one form or the other?
I could literally write on and on and not get to any solid conclusions.

One long range solution perhaps, I believe, could be Education.
All the accused of the 16th December came from extremely poor backgrounds. Such people have spent all their lives living in very misogynistic environments, wherein they witness their mothers beaten day in and day out; and their sisters treated as inferior to them. Their minds are molded since childhood into the idea that women are no different that animals, to be used when necessary.
This was also evident by the rapist Mukesh's statements in the documentary- his ignorant disbelief at being punished for a crime that he did not consider remotely major or relevant. For him, women have been treated as an object his entire life- and do you get punished for using an object?
It's a disgusting school of thought, but this belief is shared by many in our country.
Maybe if these people grew up in literate environment, where they were taught the basic equality among men and women and exposed to more liberal ideas since childhood, a lot of things could be different.
After all, knowledge is empowerment.

Although we have, i'm sure, a long way to go before we are able to eradicate Rape from our country, I feel that a change (however small at the moment) is coming on.
Maybe not in a very large scale, but our youth's mindsets have a wider view on topics such as equality and justice.
Our generation is more understanding towards the need for equality and respect for women, and hopefully, this knowledge will be passed down to the next generations in greater ratios. After all, as a friend reminds me, change in the mindset begins right from our homes.
Let's hope this positive development spreads throughout India till women don't feel forced to think twice about every step they take.

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 8

                                          ~Chapter 8~
                                       INTO THE GRAVE

Jay stood frozen in horrified alarm until it registered to him that the Girl was holding a small hand spade. She couldn't possibly be trying to dig something, (or someone) out of the grave.

His assumption was proven to be correct. After a few minutes of silent digging, the girl stopped.
She sat there for a moment, staring hard at the headstone, her lips moving in an inaudible whisper.
Her fingers deftly folded the piece of paper she was holding multiple times before placing it inside the shallow pit she before her.

THE UNMASKING

deviantart.net,Drama_tattoo_1_by_Doxycycline.jpg
In the words of George Bernard Shaw, "Two percent of the people think, three percent of the people think they think; and ninety-five percent of the people would rather die than think."
Now, I can't positively say which category I belong to, but isn't it such a wonderful activity- to think?
Wonderful, albeit under-appreciated, underrated and underutilized.
In the meager nineteen years of my life, I've come across my fair share of people, a number of whom I noticed to have a 'Sheep Herd' mentality.( Not being judgmental here though,we've all been there and done that.)
Some people see the world through the superficial glasses of  "Is it what is 'in' at the moment? Am I displaying my non-mainstream-ness to its full glory?" Maybe subconsciously, maybe not. ( Like people and their fixation with branded things. A 2 lakhs worth of Rolex is still just a watch, and at the end of the day its sole purpose is to show you the correct time.)
Sometimes its more layered- "Won't I stand out as weird if I don't do this?" (Like a guy who likes writing and reading poetry more than playing football, but he couldn't possibly confess that to his friends lest they think lesser of him because of it. Because he is a 'man', and men do not participate in delicate activities such as these- just as men never feel pain and men never cry. But of-course, that goes without saying.)
More often than not, it's forced; the famous "Log kya kahenge?"- a phrase that has haunted us all at some point in our lives. ( Like a girl who says she wants to cut off her long hair for a short pixie cut and the reaction she gets is, " Are you crazy? Do you want to look like a boy? What will people think? Lambe Baal to ek ladki ka gehna hota he pagal". As if the shortening the length of her hair has anything to do with her femininity. Like cutting it would make her any less a woman than she is now.)
And it's more common that you'd think. Nobody teaches anybody how it's done directly. Kids probably watch their friends and elders do it and adapt to it. I mean, that's probably how we learnt it too.
Our society, friends, relatives, our own insecurities, vanities, or our need to please others, to be a part of this society (similar enough to fit in but different enough to be edgy )- these and many more factors result in us hiding our true selves behind a mask of sorts. We've developed a different mask for each person, each situation. We are basically several different people and personalities, all in one.
And that leaves us frighteningly little time to actually be ourselves.
One might wonder, in all the different persons we choose/ are forced to play, which one is really us?
If we can be different people in different situations, does that make us just a jumbled messy nobody?
Kind of like negative cancels negative and the answer gets rounded off to a zero ( That doesn't really makes much sense; I'm horrible at maths.)
And isn't that a frightening prospect- that we are so busy being a perfect version of ourselves for other people that we have no time to be the real version of us.
This is where George Bernard Shaw's quote comes in. So now, if I may, I'd like you to ask yourselves this one question. Does any one of you ever find yourself in this situation? If yes, then ask yourselves this: Are you happy, in-spite of it all? Are you content and happy ? If its a yes again, then.. well and good . But if not, then its time you did something to change that.
'Cause at the end, it all boils down to this one thing- being HAPPY
At the end of it all, the happy moments of your life will amount to a lot more than the magnitude of your wealth and success combined.
And the people who accept you for who you are will matter indefinitely more than any number of people you tried to please or impress into liking you by being someone else.
Do not let your personality be distorted to fit someone else's image of you, 'cause in that case you'd be being untrue to both, that person and yourself.
As the lovely quote goes "Don't change so people will like you. Be YOURSELF, and the right people will love the real you."
So go on, be crazy, be a nerd, be loud, be an introvert, be weird, be whatever you wish to be. You live this life only once, don't let anyone define it for you.
Be the artist of your own life's masterpiece. And it doesn't even have to be a masterpiece, really- that's the beauty of it all. It can be whatever the hell you want it to be :)

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 7

                                               ~Chapter 7~
                                         MYSTERY UNVEILED

Jay watched the Girl, transfixed, as she knelt at the foot of the grave, her unblinking gaze staring at the headstone.

The moonlight bleached her completely; her red lips the only hint of color on her otherwise shockingly pale face.
A sudden gust of wind blew through the graveyard, causing her hair to blow behind her eerily, like a cape. Her unmoving figure made for such an unearthly sight that Jay was half sure she'd disappear if he allowed himself to blink.
The trance was broken as the girl reached for something behind her. A bag. So that's what had given her the semblance of a hunched figure when draped in a stole, Jay thought.
The Girl pulled out what seemed like a piece of paper in the limited moonlight.
Jay waited for uncountable minutes, hardly moving a muscle, as the girl scribbled something on the paper, pausing every few minutes to think. Once, he thought he saw her shoulders quake and with a jolt wondered whether she was crying.
Finally,she stopped writing and reached inside her bag again.
A cloud moved to block the moon just then, engulfing the cemetery in darkness.
Jay didn't see the object she pulled out of the bag until the Girl started digging at the grave.

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 6

                                              ~Chapter 6~
                                         THE GRAVEYARD

Jay followed the hunched figure for what seemed like a very long time. As they proceeded through the trail, a sense of foreboding dawned upon him. Jay knew where this trail ended.

And it was quite literally the last place he wanted to be at midnight.
He weighed his options - to barge into a graveyard, following a potential serial killer; or to turn back and forget this mess. Some sane corner of his mind told him to flee before it was too late; whatever was going on wasn't any of his business.
But predictably, his curiosity won over sanity.
As the heavily bolted and rusted iron gates of the cemetery came into view, Jay felt a shiver run up his spine. Behind the door, the crooked head stones seemed to glow in the moonlight through the thick blanket of fog.
The hooded figure noiselessly unbolted the cemetery gates and , to Jay's relief, left them ajar as it proceeded to move in.
Jay followed the figure deep into the graveyard until he no longer could because of the lack of cover.
Finally, the figure came to a stop beside an ancient looking headstone, some 14 feet away from where Jay hid.
Kneeling at the foot of the grave, the figure removed the slole that covered him in a swift motion.
Jay did not realise he had been holding his breath till it was knocked out of him in a gasp as the mystery person's face came into view.
It was her - the Girl.

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 5

                                             ~Chapter 5~
                                       MYSTERY PERSON

Jay, in his shock, was left with just enough presence of mind to run behind the overgrown bushes and hide himself. He saw the running figure slow its pace , and as it approached closer, Jay recognized that it was beyond a doubt the same mystery person he had been spying on for 2 weeks now.

The eerie magnified shadow stretched out just in front of Jay. His heart was beating frantically, and every other sound was drowned beneath the loud thumping in his ears.
The figure that passed by Jay was not nearly as tall as he had imagined. Its back was hunched and draped in a black knitted stole. Jay couldn't discern the figure's face as it was covered in shadows, but his wild imagination produced many a gruesome faces to fit the bill.
As the figure vanished into the woods, Jay ran after him , without giving himself a chance to think about it.
Following the hunched figure was easy enough, as it seemed to be following a trail.
The difficult part, however, was trying to be discreet about it.
He had to walk slowly so as to avoid stepping onto any twigs or dry leaves and attracting any attention to himself. For all he knew, the mystery person was some kind of a crazy axe serial killer on his way to his bloody hideout.
Jay gulped at that thought nervously and tried to concentrate on walking silently.

POEM: AS FAST AS HE CAN

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 4

                                         ~Chapter 4~
                                          IN A LOOP

A week and a half later, Jay found himself unable to concentrate on the daily routine of his life.

The second day he had witnessed the figure retreating into the woods at midnight, he dismissed the incident as a coincidence; or at least tried to.
But night after night as he saw the incident reoccur through his window, Jay found his curiosity growing up to dangerous levels.
One night, a few days later, as he waited for the mysterious hunched figure, no one came. The clock struck one and yet nothing changed. No eerie shadow fell upon the road.
On an impulse, Jay found himself sneaking out of his house. He ran to the road that seperated his house from the woods and came to a stop beside the crooked street lamp.
Aside from his labored panting breaths and the constant humming of insects, all was quite.
He was starting to feel silly and cursing himself for his impulsiveness. Yet he stood on.
It was a gut feeling, something sharp and blunt at the same time, something he knew not how to phrase into words. Something was going to happen tonight.
He was shaken out of his reverie when he heard footsteps.
Someone was running. And he was heading straight towards Jay.

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 3

                                          Chapter 3                                                                                                 MIDNIGHT STROLLER

Jay glanced at the time on his cell phone and stood up, feeling apprehensive. He pressed the headphones harder over his ears, hoping the loud beats would drown the throbbing at the back of his head.

For some reason he found himself walking to the window at his bedside.
The curtain had been drawn off of it, and bright moonlight filtered through the glass and into his room.
With each passing second he felt more and more silly standing there aimlessly, shuffling his feet.
At 12.10 am, his sanity returned. Just as he was about to turn away, an elongated shadow appeared on the road, followed by a mysterious hunched figure. He had been waiting for this, Jay realized now that it was actually happening, and wondered whom it could be. In front of his disbelieving eyes, the hunched figure once again vanished into the woods..
That night as he went to his bed, his sleep was restless by the vague nightmares that plagued him.

The Story Of A Peculiar Girl: Chapter 2

                                                       ~CHAPTER 2~
                                               STRANGE

School goes by in a blur of slow, tedious hours for every child, but for Jay it was more so than most.
His lack of interest in studies was on a par with his keen liking of anything with even the remotest possibility of adventure. His parents, however, were mollified by his mysterious habit of never studying and yet somehow attaining satisfying grades.
In looks he was decent enough to have caught the hearts of a few girls, but the feat was achieved in more probability due to his kind nature.
Most of Jay's peers considered him a good friend. His only great flaw, according to them, was that he acted so detached sometimes- as if lots of sports, decent marks, friendly girls, and good food wasn't enough.
And enough it wasn't, not for Jay. There was a zeal in his eyes for life that none of the people close to him shared.
As expected, what people can't understand, they ridicule and tag as strange.

SHORT STORY: The Story Of A Peculiar Girl

Bonjour mes amis! J'espere vous allez bien. I've been learning French lately, so I thought  i'd (unnecessarily) show off a little. Not that there is much to show off here, I've barely started with the course. As people who can speak a third language would know, it really does come handy- especially for secret communication with your friends. The only downside is that my sentences are now a mix of Hindi, English and French ( like, 'Tu es tres mechant. Maa kasam, je veux donner tu un punch sur ton face).
Anyway, I've sincerely been meaning to whip up some stuff for the blog and I do have some unfinished material.I know you guys probably think that's just an excuse and in actuality I'm as lazy as a sloth. (If so, really, that's rather unfair to the sloths. I may be a teeny-tiny bit lazy; but Sloths aren't lazy, guys, they're just slow so as to conserve their energy)
Anyway, in the meanwhile, I thought maybe I'd try posting some of my previous attempts at story writing. This particular one is a short story called THE STORY OF A PECULIAR GIRL.  I'm still trying to work my way up though, so please don't mind any mistakes there might be. Since I'm not too good at briefing things up and giving a summary (as i'm sure you've already noticed by now), I'll be starting with the story itself. Hope you enjoy!

                                THE STORY OF A PECULIAR GIRL

                                        ~Prologue~

Once upon a time, there lived a girl, with eyes deep and dark as a pit and hair the colour of a raven. Her slender form remained in a perpetual defensive posture, her shoulders weighed down as if with invisible burdens.Despite it all, she was a beauty; as there is beauty in the cold and bleak winter's moon.
What made her different, however, was her smile.
Or rather, the lack of it.
Her vacant stares gained her some amount of curiosity. Few were repulsed, others intrigued .
What could be the cause behind the grimly set face? What great miseries must she have suffered such that not a single smile graced her lips?
But, as is the basic human tendency, such thoughts crossed their minds for only a short while and were soon replaced by more important things like the laundry they had forgotten to take out and the cats they had forgotten to feed.
Like everybody, she had a name, but no one seemed to call her by it.
She was known simply as 'The Girl'; or as "The Peculiar Girl' by less generous souls.

                                       ~ Chapter 1~
                                   NIGHTLY STROLLS

Jay stood at his bedside, shuffling his feet restlessly. He felt rather sure he was forgetting something important, only he couldn't bring himself to remember what. The more he tried to, the more it faded away.
He glanced at the clock that hung just above his Eminem poster and felt unease creep into him. Two minutes to eleven. A strong breeze blew through the trees outside eerily, bringing to his attention the wide open window at his bedside.
Slowly, he walked to it; on the way stepping onto his younger sisters toy that let out a loud squeak, causing him to start in alarm. He pulled the window panes in, carefully bolting them in place.
As he was about to pull the curtains over it, a slight movement outside caught his attention.
Squinting though the dimness, Jay saw a figure crossing the road that separated his yard from the woods. He looked on as the figure gradually melted into the shadows in the woods and wondered why someone would want to go to such a creepy place at such a late hour.
An owl hooted at that precise moment, as if in agreement with him.
With an uneasy last glance at the woods, he drew the curtains over the window, blocking out the moonless night.
...To be continued

10 REASONS TO LOVE BOOKS

I get asked a lot about why I like reading so much. Honestly though, what is there not to love about books? You might think I am biased, given my near addiction to books. But hey, you know what they always say - 'Better be a book addict than a drug addict.' (Yes they do, chez moi.) So out of the thousands, I bring to you 10 absolutely legit reasons to adore books. Do keep in mind that these are my personal views, and its absolutely alright if you don't agree to them. :)

 1.  THOSE WHO DON'T BELIEVE IN MAGIC WILL NEVER FIND IT :
What is the daily routine of an average person? Get up in the morning, clean up, eat, work, work, work, eat, sleep and repeat.
Now is the time for some quick soul searching. Ask yourselves, do you really want this to be all there is to the world and your life?
Not to imply that every person leads a dull life or that there is no adventure. But personally, I could not bear living in a world with no possibility of the existence of Wizards and Elves and Ghosts, or anything supernatural. (On second thought, I can probably manage without ghosts).
It makes life so much more worth living when you believe there is more to it.
Books do that for me. Serious though, the inspiration for all that supernatural stuff had to come from somewhere, right? (Or should I say something...).

2.  BEAT THE BOREDOM :
Boredom becomes the mortal enemy of many a person when there is no internet connection to be found. In such situations, fear not; for I have a solution for you - Books!  No matter what, you’ll never run out of awesome books to read.

3.  KNOWLEDGE GALORE :
You’ll be surprised by how much you can learn simply by reading books. For example, I learned a great deal about Nazi occupation of Europe in WW 2 from Anne Frank’s ‘Dairy of a young girl'; about the American Civil War from Margaret Mitchell's 'Gone with the wind',  and about Greek and Roman mythology from the Percy Jackson series by Rick Riodan. If you've read Dan Brown’s books you’ll probably know what I’m talking about. So you get to enjoy and learn. Talk about killing two birds with one stone.  Just  like the frying pans- Who knew,right?! (Please tell me you get that reference.)

4.   THE SMELL :
Have you ever sniffed an old book? If not, I strongly suggest you try it. It smells divine. Sniffing books is a part of my book reading ritual basically.
Which makes me wonder why  there isn't a book-scented perfume yet? That would make millions.
(This point though is not valid for  books with those glossy sheets, like from a magazine. Sniffing that would only give you a massive headache. Fair warning.)

5.  ESCAPE ALERT :
Had a bad day? Perpetually tired due your to endless work/ school assignments? Want to provide your over-strained brain some rest? We give you one of the best stress busters ever- Books ! (Hey, the last 2 lines sound like an old-school advertisement. )
Yes, it is true that procrastinating your problems will make them all the more hard to deal with later. But lets face it -  sometimes all  you  need  is a soft bed, a great book and a cup of coffee to face the world. (Preferably followed by a nap.)

6.  ADVENTURE AND THRILL :
Books are definitely the cheapest vacation you can buy, as Charlaine Harris once said.  For all those people who love adventure - books are probably the fastest and cheapest place to start looking for it.

7.  EXPERIENCE :
Not only does reading books help you learn new and cool stuff, it also helps you gain experience. That’s the beauty of books. You are exposed to situations that may or may not be entirely favorable, and given access to thinking mechanisms of the protagonists as well as antagonists in detail.
If you read books, you’ll  find yourself thinking about a lot of things that you had never given much thought to before. Having known a sticky situation in a story plot, if a similar problem arises in your life, you are better prepared to tackle it.

8.  ENHANCE CREATIVITY :
By a first hand experience I can assure you that reading  will also help improve not only your vocabulary, but also your imagination. And the more you imagine, the more you get the power  to create. It is seen  that a lot of people who love to read develop good writing skills as well.

9.  SELF DEFENSE :
Suppose you are walking through an almost deserted alley. You hear fast approaching footsteps behind you, followed by some lame catcalling.
What do you do? I’ll tell you what. Pull out the thickest book you have (And have you will, if you love reading). Find and hit the jerk on the face hard enough to shove his nose right into his brain, and walk away. (Preferably before he regains his senses.) See, the infinite advantages of always carrying a book to read.
On a more realistic note, this point is actually an extension of point number 7. Since reading makes you familiar with the basic characteristics of different kind of people, you’ll always know which ones to steer clear of.

10. CONNECTION :
Okay, this point might be a bit hard to explain, but it is also one of the biggest reason I love reading books. Sometimes, there is that one thought or feeling that you think is strange or even unique to you. Then one day you come across a certain paragraph written in a certain book and you see your own thoughts reflected on those sheets, written by a completely different person that may be half a world away from you, at a completely different time. At that moment, you feel an indescribable sense of belonging and connection not just with that author, but also all those millions of other people who have read and loved the same book as you have. Its an incredible thing, really. Not sure if I was able to explain it right, but I sure hope you got it anyway :D

These are the top 10 reasons why I love reading books. Hope you could relate to this article!
Have a nice day :)

BIRTHDAY CARD FOR FRIENDS

So, one of my best friends turned 18 recently. Some of my other friends and I decided to surprise the b'day girl by going to her place at 7 in the morning along with cake and gifts, and decorating her terrace with balloons and streamers while she slept.  One of the gifts was the handmade card I will be showing you.

I started out by digging up a cardboard box that I had received as a wedding invitation  a few months ago, which looked something like this-

Any sort of cardboard box of a small width would work just as well. If you don't already have something like that, you can always make one, with a cardboard and some tape.

At the base of the empty box, I glued together 9 pieces of  rings that i had cut from a cardboard shuttlecock-holder tube thingy. Make sure that the width of the rings are about 3/4th the width of the box. All the rings have been covered with glazed paper. I have taken small cutouts from a normal blank sheet to fit inside these rings and written quotes on them before placing the chocolates on it. The empty spaces between the rings have been filled with Styrofoam balls.

These rings have been used to store different kinds of chocolates and stuff. I kept the chocolates inside small  string pouches before placing them. You can omit the pouches and foam balls if you want as they are  for decorative purposes only.

A tracing paper has been glued to one edge of the box to separate this section from the card that is to be kept above it.
Again, I have used a wedding invitation to made the actual card that says 'SC' on the front (Which are my friend's initials).

For making the card, I have used colored papers, ribbons, stickers, glitter pens, etc for decoration.

On one side,  I have glued a chocolate at the center that says 'I <3 U' on its wrapper. The other side is again a tracing paper with some designs on it. Beneath it I have placed an inner card in which three decorated same-sized  colored sheets have been placed. These three sheets are looped together with silver ribbons  so that we can turn them over, much like in a table calendar.

The card is then placed over the tracing paper partition in the box.

On the cover of the box, colored sheet and some pictures have been glued. To liven up the sparse decoration on the colored sheet, I have written "friends forever<3" in a string with a silver glitter pen.

( This blog is anonymous, hence the smileys instead of actual faces. 'Ek Villain' style, which i haven't yet seen by the way)

So that's the card/gift, completed. All that's left is to wrap it up, and then you're good to go.

(The card is the one with the white wrapping paper . How you present your gift matters too, in my opinion ).
Handmade cards do take considerable time and effort to complete, but that's exactly what makes them so much more valuable to the person receiving it.
And yes, my friend WAS surprised when we called her up to her terrace, in case you were wondering. It was epic :)
Hope you enjoyed the post!

Poem: BOOKS AND ME

Welcome to my world,the dreamy world of Books.
Where books fill my whole heart, every corner, all the nooks.
Its a world of fiery dragons,filled with magic and Prince Charming.
Each story is a thrill - pure and very disarming!

Drown yourself in a book, it is the best place to be in;
Beauty in every turned page, the place where all the dreams begin.
Throw away the worries, loose that frown and smile;
Be at ease my friend, pick a book - it is worthwhile!

Woven strands of thrill and horror will wreathe around your mind;
Unimaginable adventures hidden in those pages will you find.
Love so true is found,without the shadow of a cleave;
These stories will stay with you long after you take a leave.

Stories filled with knowledge, spells, places of different kind;
Sunken treasures, lost islands and of ancient Gods will they remind.
In these piles of books you learn the secrets of the world;
Just take a book in hand - sit on a sofa , snugly curled.

My world is true and whole, my world of Books is magic.
Sometimes its full of joy, sometimes its sad and tragic.
Be it old or young, every one enjoys a book.
Each new plot is a suspense, you will find yourself on hook.

It teaches of undying faith, tireless efforts and endless hope;
About how Love is the greatest power, strong as an iron rope.
So run and grab a book - just trust me on this one;
You'd never want to leave, reading books is so much fun!
